How to Play Rocket League: Control the car, not the player

Each match takes place in a rectangular, walled arena. Two teams (1 to 4 players each) use rocket-powered cars to propel a giant ball into the opponent's goal. There are no players, no offside rules, only speed, skill, and creativity.

Basic Controls

  • WASD: Drive, spin in the air
  • Shift / L1 button: Drift (sharp spin)
  • Space / A: Jump (double press to flip the car)
  • Left mouse click / R1 button: Boost (accelerate)
  • E / right analog button: Rotate camera angle

Advanced Mechanisms to Get Familiar With

Boost (acceleration energy): You collect yellow boost pellets scattered on the field. Boost is used for both ground acceleration and flying. Running out of boost means losing acceleration and flying ability.

Jump & Flip: Press jump once to jump off the ground. Press jump a second time while holding the direction to flip the car in that direction, creating powerful shots.

Aerial Flight: After jumping, you can hold boost to fly higher. Combined with the car spinning, this allows you to hit the ball at any angle.

Wall: The car can cling to the wall and continue moving. This is how to attack from unexpected angles.

Advanced gameplay tips

  • Don't blindly chase the ball. This is the most common mistake for beginners. Instead, learn to read the ball's direction and choose the right position.
  • Practice in "Training" mode to get familiar with jumps, flips, and boost control. Start with the "Rookie" exercise and gradually increase the difficulty.
  • Always return to a defensive position after attacking. In 2v2 or 3v3 matches, having the whole team push forward to attack will leave the goal exposed.
  • Use the wall effectively. Balls bouncing off walls are often opportunities for surprise attacks. Practice receiving balls from the wall to create accurate passes.
